Blinn College LogoCommunity-Based Nursing Clinical
Submitted by: Anne Rathke, Blinn College

Community-Based Nursing Clinical has been taught at Blinn College since the program began in 1989. Students have done many procedures that they have not had the opportunity to do in the hospital, such as starting IVs, drawing blood, giving shots, and doing finger sticks to check for diabetes. The clinical sites are better able to serve the health care needs of the community. More individualized attention can be given to patients and clients with the help of the students. Many of the students are from small towns in the area and have a great work ethic, and so they well-represent the college and the nursing profession. The students feel that by working in these agencies, they will be better able to refer patients in their future nursing practice.

Camp Tenaha: Occupational Therapy Assistant Program
Submitted by: Terrie King and Cheri Lambert, Panola College

The goal at Panola College was to provide a way to maintain the children’s skill levels over the summer when they were no longer in the school system receiving occupational therapy services. This summer marks the 11th year that Panola College OTA program faculty and students have worked with and learned from the kids at Camp Tenaha. Every activity provides an opportunity for challenge and success.  All of the camp counselors are allied health students and the children enjoy the one-on-one therapeutic attention and assistance throughout the day.

iVoteSome 22-24 million voters in the 18- to 29-year-old age group went to the polls on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, a turnout rate that hasn't been seen in decades, according to the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE). Those under 30 made up an estimated 18% of all voters, only a small increase over the last election, but that increase translates into at least 2 million more young voters than went to the polls in 2004. College-based voter registration and education efforts, including Campus Compact's nonpartisan 2008 Campus Vote Initiative, played a major role in raising awareness of the importance of civic participation among these voters, as well as others, nationwide. {More...}
